OK - so maybe the subject says it all, but what does that statement mean? It's the main theme of countless hymns, songs and sermons. Psalms are devoted to the idea, the book of Job ends with this very idea repeated over and over again. Why is this a big idea?
This is a big idea because we often forget it. Job certainly did and he was a pretty good guy. Sometimes it's useful just to reflect on who God is and what He did. Creating the universe isn't trivial, after all. We often want to limit God to what WE think He can or should do, but that was part of Job's problem, wasn't it? Job thought that God made a mistake, got the wrong guy or didn't know what He was doing - and he got an earful for it.
Even when we acknowledge the greatness of God and try to live up to His limitless power and abilities, we fall short. We are simply incapable of understanding how great He truly is. I think that is why Paul writes in Ephesians 3, "...to Him who is able to do immeasurably more than we can ask or imagine..." Immeasurably more! I have a pretty active imagination and I think I can ask big, but God is able to do immeasurably more than that.
It's not a ground-breaking revelation, but it is an important one to revisit. It's impossible to overestimate God, and very easy to underestimate Him. I am thankful to be brought back to the truth of God's greatness. A timely reminder that nothing is impossible with Him and that I can trust Him fully with all my needs, wants, hopes and dreams. God is indeed great and I am grateful for that!
